Requesting Copies of Previously Filed Returns

If you need a copy of a past-year Utah tax return, it may be obtained from the Utah State Tax Commission, either in person or through the mail. The fee is $6.50 for each return requested.

To obtain copies of past returns, you must fill out the request form, TC-880, Request for Tax Records. On it, you must indicate the tax year(s) requested and the social security number(s) of the taxpayer(s). Both social security numbers are required if a joint return is requested. The request must also include a daytime telephone number and must be signed by the taxpayer.

A person requesting a copy of someone else's return must have a power of attorney or notarized letter of consent signed by the taxpayer whose return is requested. Signatures of requesting individuals will be checked against signatures on the returns.

An in-person request made at the Tax Commission Building, 210 North 1950 West, Salt Lake City, will be filled within 24 hours. A request by mail normally takes one to two weeks.

Enclose a check or money order for the full amount ($6.50 for each return requested.)

Personal tax data is private and the Tax Commission will prosecute people illegally receiving or requesting such information for individuals other than themselves.
